So I have finally gotten around to posting about my new job. It has been a super-hectic couple of weeks. I'm still adjusting to the short periods (and kids) of Middle School. It seems like my planning period flies by every morning. I like the 8th graders pretty well. Most of them are nice kids with just a few jerks. I think it helps that I now teach a Tech Apps--a class they actually like--as opposed to Algebra. I've had very few discipline problems and almost no tardies. At Bos, I'd write about 5 tardies a day, sometimes as many as 10! Another big difference I've noticed is in the staff. Everyone is so friendly and willing to help you do anything, anytime. It's like a big family. We all eat together at lunch and everyone seems to genuinely like each other. High school teachers tend to stick to themselves quite a bit more so I'm adjusting to this new-found comradarie. Nearly everyone knows my name, which is super-cool, and I'm getting to where I know almost everyone else's names, too. Yearbook hasn't been too bad, either. We've met a couple of times and we just picked our cover design and theme. On Tuesday, we'll meet again to fill out our ladder (master plan for the book). This job has its drawbacks, though. The tech department hasn't made my transition easy at all and they have left a lot of loose ends untied. Hopefully, we'll get those tied in the next couple of weeks. I feel like I have a thousand students! At Bos I had less than 100 at a time, now I have about 160. It's taking me a while to get their names down. Overall, though, I'm really liking my change of scenery. Everything that everyone has told me about middle school seems to have been true. Who knows, I may never teach another high school class again!
