Well Hail!<

| | Comments (0)

Yep, it's that time of year again.  Time for lightning, thunder, rain, tornado watches and warnings and, everyone's favorite, hail.  Last night, we were hit with a good sized hail storm.

Josh is away at Camp Goddard for the week.  Myra has been pretty emotional having him gone.  I was able to distract her for a couple hours with the help of about 12 of my friends.  (I hosted a Pampered Chef party and it was great!)  The last person left around 9:30.  I got the kids in bed ASAP while I watched a lightning show out the back windows of the house.  I kept my fingers crossed that Myra wouldn't notice.  She didn't.

By 10:30 I have the kids asleep and the house almost put back together.  I was getting ready to put myself to bed when I heard a loud "CRACK!"  Not long after the first, there was another ... and then another.  They came faster and faster getting louder and louder.  My first thought?  "God, you're going to wake up Myra!"  I decided to go check on her.  Sure enough, her eyes were wide open and her whole body was shivering under the covers.

We did our usual cuddling on the couch with the laptop tracking the storm as it past over us.  We took some time to listen to the hail beat the tar out of the house, stop for about 10 to 15 seconds then start all over again.  I kept waiting for the windows to give (not letting Myra know what I was thinking) but they held up perfectly.  Around 11:15, we were finally able to go to bed.

I didn't get any pictures of my own but here is one someone nearby took.

hail.jpgI double checked everything this morning and couldn't find any damage.  The property management company, however, is going to be sending someone this way to check the roof.  I know.  I was shocked too.  They won't take care of the foundation, they'll do a quick fix with used materials and they'll paint over water damage without checking for mold but they'll make sure the roof is good?  Whatever.  It's not our problem come August 31st.

Cold Game<

Myra's second soccer game was today and it was FREEZING!  I added some pictures to Flickr so everyone can see for themselves.  We only played 2 quarters and then called it a day.  The kids were really cold but they had fun.  Myra got a breakaway in the 2nd quarter and ALMOST scored a goal.  She really is getting better!  We ended up losing 2-1.  Here she is at the end of the game running through the parent tunnel:

The Escape of Star Wars Dude<

Mom wrote a nice post with a bunch of fun stories from our childhood.  It was full of cute stories about all of us kids.  There was one about me losing an action figure that I still recall very vividly.  I refer to this incident now as the Escape of Star Wars Dude.

I had just gotten that guy either that day or the day before.  I was pumped!  He was a Star Wars action figure and one of my first.  I was convinced that he would be the cornerstone of the immense collection I would someday have.  He was wearing a cool black uniform and had cool hoses that went to his helmet with lots of cool buttons (that did nothing back in those days) on his chest.  He also had cool gloves and boots.

I wanted to make him parachute to the ground--since space pilots needed parachutes--and I just so happened to have a helium baloon laying around.  OK, so it was floating around.  Anyway.  I tied him on with some yarn and experimented in the house.  He was too light and kept floating to the ceiling.  This would not do.  So I searched around for some weight to add to him.  I came upon an old plastic bottle that used to hold bubbles.  It was a PERFECT fit.  I could jam him down in there and he would stay.  Best of all, the weight was exactly enough to make him slowly float to the ground like he was under a parachute.  I could just give him a quick tug and he'd come right out of the bottle.  Time to go outside so I could throw him REALLY high.

I went outside and the weather was beautiful.  Almost no wind and a cloudless sky.  I reared back and gave Stormy--I'd decided his name was Stormy because he was like a storm trooper, but cooler--a massive heave.  My man and his 'chute flew about 30 feet in the air in a big rainbow.  The balloon worked as before.  He floated back to Earth, but a lot faster than I remembered him doing in the house.  The bottle hit on the dirt a little harder than I was expecting.  It jarred Stormy loose.  Stormy started to float skyward under the balloon.  Everything went into slow motion as I realized what was about to happen.  I ran after him doing the "NOOOOOooooooo!" that you always see in the movies.  I got there about a foot too late.  I watched him drift slowly to the heavens.  It took a few minutes for him to float out of sight in the direction of Davenport.  I spent a few minutes trying to convince Dad to jump in the car and help me chase Stormy, but he didn't seem to think it was feasible.

So yeah, he was my favorite dude and brand new.  I lost him on the VERY FIRST throw.  Sickening when I think back to it.  Oh well, it's a good story now.  Anyway, here's a pic of him I found on ebay. He must have landed in the yard of a collector over in Davenport, or maybe Chandler.

SURPRISE!<

Spring Break was super busy.  Friday after work, we loaded up the car and headed to Stroud stopping in Seminole for some catfish.  After we closed to place down, we finished our journey so that we could get up the next day and head on into Stillwater to celebrate something BIG ... my dad's 60th birthday!

It was a surprise party about two and a half months in the making.  The family met Shawn, Rachel and Angie at the church's parish hall to decorate.  Dad thought they were out shopping and he had no idea our family was even in Oklahoma.  About 6pm, a call is put through to Dad saying that the toilets at the church are overflowing.  Dad freaks and rushes over.  By the time he arived, the place was all decked out and all the guests had arrived.  It was great!

The theme of the party was a "roast".  It wasn't quite the kind where the honoree gets ... well ... burned but more of the kind where people got up and shared how Dad had touched their lives changing it forever.  He had friends from the church, friends from work and of course his family all telling stories.  We even had the pleasure of hearing a song by one of his retired police buddies about Dad riding his Harley Davidson police motorcycle.

It was a wonderful evening celebrating a wonderful man.  Happy Birthday Dad!

Another day older and deeper in debt!  That song runs through my head when I look at this picture of Andrew taken at Granny's house.  He got into some used charcoal that was thrown out in the weeds.  I have no idea how he got sooo much on his face.  I gotta give credit to Anna on this one.  She grabbed my camera and snapped this pic.  NICE ONE!

Yesterday at dinner, Noah said very matter-of-factly, "Daddy, you're a thumbs up.  Mommy, you're a thumbs up.  Myra, you're a thumbs DOWN."  Myra immediately complained of her hurt feelings.  Chris and I were trying hard not to laugh.  It seemed like the kind of trick an OLDER brother would play on his sister.

I finally took a picture of the Knoblauchcremesuppe. Trust me, Mom, it looks as good as it tastes. The garlic taste is actually pretty mild. Maybe I'll make you some when we come to visit.

It's been far too long since we've posted pictures just for the sake of posting them.  We got a little burned out after a full year of pics, so we've been taking it easy.  This is a shot I took at Myra's practice on Tuesday.

We saw this car driving down the street earlier in the week with a familiar number on it:

Today, on the way to pick up Noah, we saw it parked in the Walgreen's parking lot.  Of course, we had to show the little man.  We brought him to the drugstore and showed him the car and he was excited by it, but I couldn't get him to pose for a picture with it.  He did say a couple of times that the Mach 5 looks funny!  I told him it was under cover.
